When did you start writing?

I've always enjoyed writing stories. So I could say when I was five years old. I began to see myself as a children's writer in 1988 and became serious about that 1n 1998. I was first published in 2000. I now have over 30 works published. This includes novels for children and young adults, short stories, flash fiction, experimental fiction, educational materials and academic papers. I'm currently writing about feisty women in the 1940s.

What drove you to write?

Ah, there was that incident when we were on holiday  in the south of Spain when the children ran out of reading materials and some odd and rather magical things were happening nearby. I completed 1000 words a day and just about kept ahead of the youngsters.

Who are your inspirations?

There are so many .... Charles Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, David Almond, Philip Pullman, Neil Gaiman ... I could go on and on.

What did you do before you became a writer?

I taught languages to 11-16 year-olds. So, it's not surprising that I ended up writing for young adults.

Tell us something quirky

I sing tenor in a choir.
