KIYASU OKA is a Taiwanese professional illustrator and entrepreneur, whose title can be referred to as a professional color magician. She is the “Magician of Color” from Taiwan. Her most well-known writing work is a personal love letter called “Taiwan is my Country,” published on her Web site since April of 2016. Kiyasu Oka’s Web site is at www.kiyasugreen.com.
Formerly from the Department of Mathematics at NTU, the most prestigious university of the country, this multi-talented illustrator and entrepreneur has a portion of her career dedicated to doing what she calls “destiny work”: writing articles and e-mails, doing assistant work, proofreading, correcting English writing mistakes made by native English speakers, etc.
About the Illustrator:
My
name is Kiyasu Oka, and I am a professional illustrator – the “Magician of
Color” – from Taiwan. You can find samples of my
illustration on this page and on the Gallery page of my Web site at: www.kiyasugreen.com/gallery.php.
How and
where do you work?
I work worldwide from home
via e-mail. I live in Taipei, TAIWAN. I used to draw and color digitally a lot before 2009. At that
time I would often draw or color in Adobe Photoshop using a Wacom tablet.
However, these days I tend to create art works with only colored pencils
and markers, with the former being the one I use the most.
What sort
of projects are you interested in?
I work on projects for picture
books (e.g., children’s illustration, art books), character design (e.g., fictional stories, mascot concept
design, concept art and illustration for animation or video games), books or magazines (e.g.,
covers, contents), novels or short
stories (e.g., cover art and art for
certain pages), educational
material (usually aimed at around the elementary school years of third grade to fifth grade, but not
limited to it), card decks (e.g., playing
cards, character cards), CD or music
album art (e.g., jacket art, manual
art),
pop art (in my
representative style), calendars, pamphlet art, video game
illustration (e.g., jacket art, manual art), anime art (e.g., concept art, design, illustration, DVD jacket, manual
illustration), manga books (e.g.,
providing illustrations for the cover and various pages inside), art books, and anthologies.
My rates and how I charge may differ depending
on the demands and the project.
For example, for a picture
book project, an approximate is:
$350 ~ $500 USD for the cover
illustration
$3,300~$6,000 USD for 12
full-color illustration pieces (book cover already included)
I also accept royalties for
book publications. Depending on the project and other factors (e.g., your
professional merits, the type of case), I might also accept own-budget rates.
My charging rules tend to be either of the following three:
- By Hour: $100~$10,000+ (per hour)
- By Project: $1,000~$10,000+ (per project)
- Exception: ... But I am open to your-budget projects, royalties, etc., depending on the merits, the type of case, and other factors.
